  THE ARTIST: Brian Johnson

Trained in Fine Art and Art History at Rhodes University and through the University of South Africa, Brian practiced as an art teacher, mainly at the Frank Joubert Art Centre in Newlands, Cape. Here he was principal for over 20 years, but remained actively teaching art history, painting and photography. His teaching, and part-time study (D.Litt et Phil in local architecture), meant very little time for his own creative work. So, when teachers were offered severance packages in 1996, Brian took advantage of this, hoping to teach part-time and devote more attention to his painting and enamelling.

In 1991 Brian became one of the founding members of the Enamellers’ Guild of South Africa, and remained their secretary until the dissolution of the Guild in 2001. The Guild, through its chairlady, Margaret Fairhurst, promoted interest in enamelling and gave access to magazines such as “Glass on Metal”. The major difficulty facing local enamellers is the lack of suppliers of the basic materials.
