The most popular application for enamelling is most certainly jewellery, especially earrings, brooches and pendants. Most of the work illustrated is on copper and they can incorporate copper or silver cloissons (wire imbedded in the enamel) as well as silver foil. Various lustre effects may also be utilised in torch-fired works.
The beauty of enamel jewellery is the use of colour as a full range of tones and effects are possible and are much flatter and lighter than semi-precious stones. They are relatively light in weight but, being essentially glass, should not be bent or dropped onto a hard floor.
The jewellery is supplied complete with fittings – these vary from item to item and can often be ordered specially. The earrings come with ordinary nickel-plated hooks or studs, but silver fittings can be arranged. Some are further decorated with beads but these can also be varied for a specific order. Brooches have pins securely glued to the back with epoxy. Pendants are supplied with a choker cord, usually decorated with a few beads.
